FIXING JURY IMAGES

JURY SLIDE PHOTOGRAPHY

Asking for square images is fair for all artists.

back to the digital jury image recommendations page

Asking for square images is fair for all artists because they show both horizontal and vertical images equally in size to the jury. The most common asked for size by art shows not using ZAPP or JAS is rectangular, for example 1024x768 which is 4:3 monitor size proportion. You can clearly see in the #1 and #2 images below how the horizontal image has an unfair advantage when being compared to the vertical image. The vertical image is only three quarters the size of the horizontal image. And you can clearly see in the #3 and #4 images that square images show both horizontal and vertical images equally in size. Lastly, images #5 and #6 are the same image in a 35mm slide mount rotated both horizontally and vertically. You can see how asking for a square (1920x1920) image format is like asking for a 35mm slide because 35mm slide mounts are square and the rotation of the opening compensates for the horizontal or vertical alignment of the image showing them both equally in size.

The best way to view images (if you're not using ZAPP or JAS) is to use the ACDSee image viewing program.
